KAPITAN CHUNG THYE PHIN BUILDING
Arlene House (Kapitan Chung Thye Phin Building), also known as "Phin Kee Chan," was commissioned in 1905 by Kapitan Chung Thye Phin. He was a prominent figure in the tin and rubber industry and the "Last Kapitan China of Perak and Malaya." The building was used as the headquarters to manage his vast business empire during the Tin era of Malaya.
This colonial heritage building features Neo-Classical Victorian-Palladian architecture and has undergone 8 years of conservation works since 2012. The restoration process was completed in 2020, and the building has been restored to its former glory and nostalgic charm of one of the most photographed "picture-postcard landmark and building" of its golden era.
As part of its adaptive reuse activities, Arlene House now houses the "Made In Ipoh" History and Heritage Gallery-Museum showcasing the theme "The Last Kapitan Of Malaya" and "Ipoh, The City That Tin Built." The gallery-museum offers walk-in/guided tour visits, changing exhibitions, and activities.
"Made In Ipoh @ Arlene House" is a "Must See & Visit" Historical and Heritage Landmark and Gallery-Museum when you are in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia! Arlene House is being developed into a "Placemaking" venue and platform for educational-entertainment and appreciation of history, heritage, culture & arts activities. It is also available for rental-usage for photo-videography works, suitable private and corporate functions, events and exhibition activities.
(aka CHOP HENG WOH SHOE MAKER & TAILOR SHOPHOUSE)
Transporting us back to the 1890s, the intermediate double-storey shophouse captivates with its remarkable dual-frontage design and a picturesque open-air courtyard nestled in its heart. Spanning an impressive width of 21ft (6.4m) and stretching 120ft (36.5m) in length, this architectural gem encompasses approximately 4,800sq ft (445sq m) of meticulously crafted space. Divided into three distinct sections, it holds secrets waiting to be discovered.
Every corner of the shophouse's layout tells a story of purposeful functionality. The front section beckons with its inviting ambiance, inviting customers and guests to explore its offerings. Venture further, and you'll find the mid-section, where a charming open-air courtyard thrives, providing a sanctuary for both work and daily living needs. Here, the kitchen, toilet, bath, and water well seamlessly blend into a harmonious blend of practicality and comfort. As you reach the back section, a haven for storage and daily activities reveals itself, while the upper floor offers additional space for exploration.
For two dedicated years, from 2014 to 2015, the conservation and restoration of Arlene Terrace, once known as the Chop Heng Woh Shoemaker and Tailor Shophouse, unfolded. This extraordinary endeavor demanded unwavering commitment, as every intricate detail was delicately nurtured to preserve its historical essence, breathing new life into its venerable walls.
Emerging from its meticulous restoration, Arlene Terrace embarked on a transformative journey of adaptive reuse, blossoming into the enchanting Funtasy House Trick Art 3D Museum we know today. Delight awaits as you step into a realm where reality melds with imagination. Prepare to be captivated by awe-inspiring trick art and mesmerizing 3D installations, inviting you to embark on a whimsical adventure that lingers in your memory long after your visit.

Visits by Dato' Ifa Raziah and Perak Tourism to Made In Ipoh @ Arlene House on 1 January 2023.
The building at Jalan Dato Maharajalela in Ipoh, with the simple sign “Bangunan SZTOLEE” wasn’t much to look at until 2011 that Micheal Chan started paying attention to it. That’s because he and his wife, Arlene Loke, were looking for a heritage building to invest in. And after a brief tour of its interior, they realised they were in love with it. However, Arlene House wasn’t the only hidden gem they found. In 2013, as they passed by a row of pre-war shophouses along Market Street, they peeked into one of them: a “Straits Eclectic” architecture shophouse that had piqued their interest since 2012.
